Overview

Since Pokémon Stadium for the Nintendo 64, every Pokémon type had a color associated with it, in order to symbolize it and help make it stand out against the other types. The colors used were a bit plain, and some types—like Dragon and Poison—would have multiple colors associated with it… but the colors chosen made sense. Later as the games grew more sophisticated, the colors for the types slowly started to crystalize and would become more and more associated with one another.

Anyways, I was bored one night, so I went through as many Pokémon games as I could and pulled the various colors used for each type. The results of this effort can be seen below… and although each game had a variety of ways to depict their type colors, I tried my best to do the most accurate job I could. I even included the ???-type that wasn’t used outside of Gens 2-4. I’ll get to the full details later, but for each type I split them up by game and also—if possible—included a sprite or screenshot that the colors were pulled from.

Now if you just want to see the overall result of my efforts—that is to say, if there was ever one, single color that best represents each type—you can see that right here! Also included is a quick blurb about why (I think) that particular color best represents that certain type. This chart will also let you zoom down to that section and see the specific colors used.

  • As a side note, the below list has two columns about the color’s data. These columns are:
    • ALL MIX — this is the single color that is generated when you mix ALL the colors used for that type, at least according to the below data. It provides both the HTML HEX code and the HSB data for that color.
    • GRADIENT — this is the gradient that is generated when you blend the color data, albeit light with light and dark with dark.
TYPE ALL MIX (HEX + HSB) GRADIENT NOTES
b Bug #94bc4a — 081H 61S 74B Bugs reflect a mix of the green of the plant-life that you find insects more often in, but with a tinge of red to represent the blood of animal-life.
d Dark #736c75 — 287H 08S 46B Dark is dark. Incidentally it seems to be an inversion of the Normal-type.
n Dragon #6a7baf — 225H 39S 69B Dragon has had so many different colors associated with it over the years, but indigo seems to be the one that is most associated with it. Though it might be more accurate to consider it “azure”, as that is the color that is most associated with dragons in Asia.
l Electric #e5c531 — 049H 79S 90B Yellow is the most obvious choice for electricity.
y Fairy #e397d1 — 314H 33S 89B Fairy has this sort of pixie pink color, which… y’know… is a cute color of little pixie fairies.
f Fighting #cb5f48 — 011H 65S 80B Fighting is represented by this more sanguine red, almost as if representing the boiling-red blood of physical battle! (Note: Fighting and Fire have swapped colors over the years, where Fighting has become lighter and Fire becoming darker.)
r Fire #ea7a3c — 021H 74S 92B Fire is mostly red, but it also reflects the oranges and yellows that are also part of a roaring flame. (Note: Fighting and Fire have swapped colors over the years, where Fighting has become lighter and Fire becoming darker.)
v Flying #7da6de — 215H 44S 87B Flying takes on the light blue hues of the sky, as well as the slight coldness that comes with flying that high…
h Ghost #846ab6 — 261H 42S 71B The color of the Ghost-type is a bit more similar to Dragon-type’s color, albeit slightly more red. The dark purple color represents the supernatural spirits that glow ever-so-slightly against the dim light of the night.
g Grass #71c558 — 106H 55S 77B Grass is green.
a Ground #cc9f4f — 038H 61S 80B Relative to the similarly earthy Rock-type, Ground-type had more yellow and browns, representing sand and dirt.
i Ice #70cbd4 — 185H 47S 83B Ice has the whites of fresh snow, with some of the blue peeking through due to centuries of ice being compressed.
c Normal #aab09f — 081H 10S 69B You can’t get more vanilla than this boring grey color. Incidentally, it seems to be an inversion of Dark-type.
o Poison #b468b7 — 298H 43S 72B You can almost imagine a vat of putrid boiling purple sludge at some processing plant somewhere, which seems to be a common color for “goop”.
p Psychic #e5709b — 338H 51S 90B This particular shade of purple seems to be a combination of what you’d think “psychic energy” could look like, but it also has more reddish-pinks associated with the color of the brain itself.
k Rock #b2a061 — 047H 46S 70B Rock, on the other hand, reflects more of the dull greys of stone and concrete.
m Steel #89a1b0 — 203H 22S 69B Steel reflects the dull blues of metals in general, but also the blue that come from the oxide layer which forms after tempering metal.
w Water #539ae2 — 210H 63S 89B Water has the darker blues that is most associated with it, especially as you dive further down into the depths of the ocean.
Z ???-Type #81a596 — 155H 22S 65B This is the color used in the ???-type used between Gens 2 through 4. It essentially represents whatever color isn’t already a type.

This overall average color was generated by taking every color used for each type from each game and blended them together, thus forming the most overall and average and succinct color of that type. Pretty neat, huh?

So to wrap things up: I like doing this kind of stuff because it’s fun and I’m just curious to know what color totally summarizes that type. But more importantly, as an artist, knowing these colors definitely helps with my art, because it gives me a pallet to work with. You’ll definitely see some examples when I start drawing art for the GS Space World fake card set… but imagine a Ground-Water Pokémon drawn and colored using only the colors that were used for that type across 15 years of Pokémon games. I can’t wait to see what that could look like! :D

Phew! That was a job and a half… but it was totally worth it in the end!

As far as I’m aware, there is no truly official way to order the types. Of course there are a few ways to do it:

  • ENGLISH: This is what the ColorDex itself uses. Basically it’s the order of the types in English Alphabetical order. This has been used a few times, but not very often.
  • COLOR: This is an order that I calculated based on the colors used for each type. Normal, Steel and Dark are kept separately, however.
  • LIGHTNESS: This is another calculated order, where it’s based on the apparent lightness of the type’s color.
  • VG ORDER: This order is used often in the Pokémon video games.
  • ALT ORDER: This order is also used in the video games, almost just as often.
    • (Side note: older versions of this list sometimes swap Grass and Electric with one another.)
  • GUIDE ORDER: This order was seen in various Pokémon strategy guides.
  • POKEDEX ORDER: This order was seen in the Pokédex 3D and 3D Pro eShop utilities for the 3DS.
English Color Lightness VG Order Guide Order Alt Order Pokedex Order
b Bug f Fighting d Dark c Normal c Normal c Normal c Normal
d Dark r Fire h Ghost f Fighting f Fighting r Fire r Fire
n Dragon a Ground n Dragon v Flying o Poison w Water w Water
l Electric k Rock f Fighting o Poison a Ground g Grass l Electric
y Fairy l Electric o Poison a Ground v Flying l Electric g Grass

r Fire g Grass r Fire b Bug k Rock f Fighting f Fighting

Focusing on the last three columns, some interesting patterns emerge:

  • Fire, Water, Grass and Electric are always next to one another.
  • The same goes with Poison-Ground-Glying and Ghost-Dragon-Dark-Steel.
  • Now it’s worth pointing out that between Gen 1-3, all attacks of a particular type could be ONLY Physical or Special-type attacks. Those types are:
    • PHYSICAL: Normal Fighting Flying Ground Rock Bug Ghost Poison Steel
    • SPECIAL: Water Grass Fire Ice Electric Psychic Dragon Dark
  • Knowing this, the VG and Guide Orders seem to split the types equally between the two. The Alt Order, however, mixes them up a bit. Hmmm…
  • But then again, the Alt Order and the Pokedex Order are similar; only Psychic, Dragon, and Ice have shifted positions, and Grass and Electric have swapped once again.

I’ll keep an eye out for more and other offiical ordering of the types. But for now, this is what I got. It’s interesting to see these different official ordering. I wonder what they are based on themselves?

I’m aiming to collect color data for all types, and in all possible Pokémon games. Yes, this includes Gen 1 and 2, which didn’t exactly colorize their types. If you want to know how I got these colors, here’s a quick rundown:

  • GEN 1 — Yes, I realize Gen 1 lacks type color data. So what I’m planning on doing is gathering color data for each Pokémon, sort them by their types, and then sort of generalize their colors. It’ll make a bit more sense when I’ve actually got something to work with.
    • Also covered is the colors used in Pokémon Stadium, which was the first game to give each type a color. These colors specifically cover the color of the text for each type, the color of the type icon for the attack, and three colors used in the Pokémon‘s type icon.
  • GEN 2 — I’ll be doing the same with Gen 2. However, the sprites from Gen 2 are a lot more colorful, so it might produce more colorful or complex… or maybe even muddy… colors for their types. We can only try and see.
    • Pokémon Stadium 2 also had colors for each type, although only for the type’s name and the type’s icon graphic.
  • GEN 3 — This is the first mainline games which actually associated colors for each type, and they used them in multiple places, namely:
    • Type icons for Pokémon in both their individual stat page and Pokedex entry in both RSE and FRLG.
    • Type icons in both Pokémon Colosseum and XDX-DEcks-Dee
    • Technical Machines (TM) were given their own icons startimg in FRLG, which were all colorized according to type.
  • GEN 4 — These games use the same type icons as in RSE, but it also added:
    • new colors for Arceus’ Plates
    • new type icons in both DPP and HGSS
    • colors for each attack, at least when in battle (via the touch screen)
  • GEN 5 — Black and White simplified its type colors, as well as added Gems for each type.
    • touch screen in-battle attacks for both BW and BW2 use the same colors, although BW2 use less of them.
  • GEN 6 — This Gen created new type icons for XY, which were also used in ORAS.
    • Although for now that’s all I have for Gen 6, they also colorized the Attack buttons according to its type, so I’ll be adding that later.
  • GEN 7 — Sun and Moon updated the type icons yet again. But also…
    • Each type was given an “-inium Z” crystal.
    • Attacks were likewise colored, which I will add later.
  • GEN 8Pokémon Home and Sword/Shield has a whole slew of colors for each type, so I aim to get them all.
    • For “SwSh Profile”, the three colors represent the type icon’s color, the darker half where the type’s name is, and the lighter color which is used to denote the type of a Pokémon‘s attack.
    • For “SwSh Attack”, the colors are the ones used for each attack when you’re actually in battle. The darker color is used in the background of the attack, while the lighter color is seen in its type icon. Except for Normal-type attacks, which is reversed for some reason.
    • Finally, the “PokéHome Profile” basically uses the same colors as “SwSh Profile”, except for the lightest color, which is based on the background for its attacks. That said, this is based on the Mobile (Android) version, as the Switch version doesn’t use any different colors.
    • I also included the colors used in the newly-introduced “Technical Records”.
    • Also included are the Let’s Go! games and Pokémon Legends Arceus
  • GEN 9 — Scarlet/Violet updated its symbols as well as its colors.
    • Also included is the updated versions of HOME.
  • POKÉMON GOPokémon Go has two type colors:
    • one for the type icon itself, and,
    • the other for the Type Badge in your Achievements
  • OTHER — Then there’s stuff like…
    • icons used in the Pokémon Mysterious Dungeon series,
    • Pokémon Conquest; which uses different colors in its type icon, preview boxes, and type search window (for both selected and unselected states). For now it only covers the type icon and preview color.
    • Pokémon Rumble, at least the “Blast” title for the 3DS.
    • the Pokédex 3D and 3D Pro eShop app
    • Various mobile games like Pokémon Masters and Pokémon Sleep
    • Each of the Pokémon websites—at least the North American, Chinese and Korean versions—have their own online Pokedexes, which color the types as well.
      • Japan’s site does as well, but the colors used are the same as the ones used in Gen 8 games.
  • TO BE ADDED — as of 2025-04-10, pretty much all major games, including mobile games, have been added! There are some random Japan-only games plus the Pokémon Ranger games… but, I really don’t feel like adding them right now.

Apart from the fact that I have these colors collected, I’ve also provided sprites showing where the colors came from, as well as the HEX/HTML color code for each entry. This way you can use them in your own artwork! I mean, that really is the whole point of all this after all… (BONUS: You might be able to get more colors and hex codes if you dig around! Or maybe just use the eyedropper on the generated gradients?)

While the ColorDex is mostly done, it remains a work in progress, amd so the ColorDex might have new entries added from time to time. So while I’ll still be adding to it here and there, if I made any significant additions, I’ll be sure to let you guys know! But otherwise, enjor the ColorDex!
