With the release of the most recent Pokémon Legends Z-A trailer on Pokémon Day (February 27th, 2025), it not only revealed that Kalos will be using PokéLatin—thus underlining its European inspiration, similar to Galar/Britain and Paldea/Iberia—but that it also will be a slightly updated version of it! This is still a work in progress, but here is what has been revealed thus far:
A couple things we noticed right away include:
- New letters!
- Some of them are absolutely new, but others might just be a version of an existing one
- Use of diacritics!
- Unlike IRL English, which is relatively plain, IRL French uses a lot of diacritics: À Ç É Ô Ü… just to name a few. So it looks like Kalosian PokéLatin will be using them as well.
- Familiar PokéLatin words remain
- Once again, Pokémon is ?wru#wt, underlining that certain words are intended to be recognized.
With all this info, I’ll probably be updating the Thraex Sans font I created… I may end up having to create a new font file to account for all these changes. We’ll keep you posted! In the meantime, you’re welcome to swing by The Language Institute channel over at the PA! Discord to share with us anything else you’ve noticed; we’d love to have you!
